Attempted Murder

Hennessy's pov.

"Your husband is having the time of his life in my bed."

I read the message my foster sister had sent over and over as my already broken heart broke into a million more pieces. Attached to the text was a picture, a picture of her and my husband cuddling in the sheets. He was sleeping, his body coated with sweat. He had obviously had the time of his life.

I never asked for much in life.

I just wanted to love and be loved. That had been my wish since I was little, but it seemed that no matter what I did, I didn't deserve to be loved by anyone. By my parents, my siblings, and even my husband.

Another text dropped. I read it, mentally preparing myself for whatever insults she had typed.

"Did you actually expect him to remember a trivial date like today? Wedding anniversary, my foot. He was supposed to be mine from the beginning. How dare you try to celebrate a wedding anniversary with a man that doesn't love you?"

I couldn't take it anymore. I dropped my phone and scanned the table in front of me with my eyes. I had arranged a romantic dinner for my husband and I with a little hope that he would celebrate our anniversary with me tonight. But as Sasha's words rang in my ears, I couldn't help but admit that she was right. Who was I to think that Dave would consider celebrating a wedding anniversary with me? Celebrations like this were meant for people madly in love with each other.

I had been married to Dave Williams for two years. He never wanted to marry me. He had eyes for my sister, Sasha. She was a mischievous woman who hated commitments, so I wasn't very surprised when she didn't show up on their wedding day. But when my foster parents decided to save face by marrying me off to Dave in Sasha's place, it took me off guard. To be honest, I had been a little bit elated. Dave was my first and only love. He was the first person that made my heart beat like crazy, so it didn't seem like a bad idea to take Sasha's place since she didn't want him after all. He was wealthy, and because of that, my parents didn't want to lose him as a son-in-law. Everything had happened within a blink of an eye. I had no idea how they managed to convince Dave, but he agreed to marry me. And even though I had mixed feelings about everything, I put the wedding dress on and became his wife.

I was determined to make him fall in love with me. It had seemed like something that was so easy to do at the start of the marriage. My parents and siblings didn't like me because I wasn't an original member of the family, so I planned to make Dave accept me. I did everything I could. I was a good girl, worshipped him. And when it seemed like he was starting to have a soft spot for me in his heart, Sasha showed up again.

I didn't expect him to fall so blindly for her even after she had betrayed and abandoned him without thinking, but he did. And I found out that she didn't even have feelings for him. She just wanted him for herself because we were married.

She had always been that way. My happiness got under her skin every single time. I had never really had much, but I had always been contented with the little I had. Sasha, on the other hand, could only be satisfied after taking everything she could from me.

"Mrs… Williams?"

I was jolted back to the present by the voice of the housekeeper who was standing cautiously behind me. I blinked repeatedly in an attempt to get rid of the tears that had gathered behind my eyelids before turning to her with a fake smile on my face.

"You called me."

"Yes." She stepped forward. "Mr Williams sent a message for you. You're to meet him at Sky hotels." She showed me a text on her phone, apparently sent with Dave's number. I gave her a small nod as my thoughts wandered again.

He was supposed to be in bed with Sasha. Why did he suddenly want to see me by this time of the night? Dave rarely asked to see me. The few times he did, it was to belittle me for a mistake I made. I glanced at the time on my phone. It was almost eleven in the night.

"Are you hesitating, Mrs Williams?" I heard the housekeeper ask. When I turned to look at her, she flashed me a soft smile and gestured at the feast on the table. "Today is your anniversary, isn't it? I think you should go. He probably prepared a surprise event for you."

A chuckle escaped my lips. "That's impossible, Susan. You know Dave. You know how much he hates me."

Susan lived with us in the villa since I moved in after getting married to Dave, so she had a first hand knowledge of his disdain for me. Once in a while, she would give me words of encouragement.

"That's what you think, Mrs Williams. You never can tell, though. People change. Why don't you throw on a nice dress and some makeup and go to him?"

After much contemplation, I did just that. I rushed upstairs and dusted my face with minimal makeup, and in a few minutes, I was on my way to the hotel.

As soon as I got there, an attendant directed me to the rooftop. As I entered the elevator, I let myself imagine all sorts of things. What if Dave had really planned something? A drone show, maybe. My imagination started to run wild.

But, I got disappointed. Again. I got to the rooftop to see that there was no event or drone display planned. There were no anniversary cakes. There was no Dave. There was only Sasha, leaning against a railing in a white bathrobe and furry slippers.

"I didn't think you'd actually come, but you did," she sneered as she started to stalk towards me. "You are so audacious."

"W…what are you doing here?" I questioned, my voice timid. "Dave sent a text…"

"Dave didn't send any text, I did. Wait, why did you come here? Were you expecting a lovely anniversary celebration? I bet you came here with really high hopes, Hennessy." She was in front of me, breathing down my face angrily. I took a step back in a bid to put some space between us.

"Why did you call me here, Sasha?"

"To mock you, obviously. And you made it so easy for me by actually showing up. Why are you always so dumb, Hennessy? Why do you always seem so pathetic?"

"I won't exchange words with you, Sasha. Since you don't have anything to say to me, I'm leaving." That said, I turned away from her and started to return the way I came, but that only angered her. She grabbed my hair and yanked it forcefully. In defence, I grabbed hers too. She screamed loudly as we started to struggle.

Everything happened so fast. One minute, we were trying to pull out each other's hair, the next minute, Sasha was hanging down the railing. She had lost her balance and fallen off the roof. Her scream pierced the night as she held the railing tightly.

"Oh my god, Sasha" I exclaimed. I leaned over and held out my hand for her to grab. "Hold my hand. I'll pull you up."

I couldn't bear to glance down at the distance below her. I'd never been a fan of heights. Seeing her hanging down from that railing was almost enough to make my heart jump out of my throat.

Suddenly, a wicked smirk graced her face. I frowned, how could she be smiling in this kind of situation. She was in danger.

"Don't you think this is a perfect opportunity to get rid of you, Hennessy? I hate the idea of sharing Dave with you."

She couldn't be thinking what I thought she was thinking. There was no way she planned to deliberately let go of the railing. I hastily reached for her hand. "Don't do this, Sasha. What if you die?"

"I won't die. But you? You'll rot in jail."

Right before my eyes, she left the railing and fell. I let out a loud scream and placed my hand over my eyes, unable to look as I heard a dull thud in the distance.

"What's going on here?"

I turned to see Dave behind me. He looked like he had just woken up from sleep. He saw me and scowled, his irritation evident. "What are you doing here, Hennessy? Are you keeping tabs on me now?"

I covered my mouth with my hands, still in shock. "S… Sasha," I stuttered and pointed at the railing. "Sasha fell off the building, Dave."

Confusion clouded his face gradually, but when he understood what I was trying to say, he shoved me to the side, rushed to the railing and looked down. I did so too, feeling hot tears run down my cheeks. I couldn't see anything conclusive because of the distance, but a crowd had gathered around a tree. She must have fallen into a tree.

"What have you done, Hennessy?" Dave thundered and dashed towards the exit. I sank to the floor and hugged my knees, praying earnestly that she was alive. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if she didn't survive that fall.

I sat there for a few minutes until Dave returned with two uniformed policemen trailing behind him. "That's her," he stated, pointing at me. "Arrest her this instant."

One of the men took out a handcuff from his pocket and dangled it in front of my face.

"Mrs Williams. You're under arrest for the attempted murder of Sasha Cullen."

I held my hands out as he out the handcuffs around my wrist. Then I let them lead me away to jail.
